LOCKED TO MERIDIAN

[Claude's communion prescence has always been like a summer breeze; warm, easygoing, albeit difficult to read before it moves on. Now it has more of a brittle, bitter quality, like a looming dust-cloud he has to hold at a distance. There's no going back from this point when he knows things will only escalate from here, and so now seems like an important time to address his fellow Meri.]

The fight for the next Oracle will be on us soon. The Tribune may have been slain, but he entrusted the future of the worlds to us. Though he won't be able to help us see this through, we can still fight for him, and all the others we've lost along the way. We can fight for Springstar... and we can fight for Quetzalcoatl.

[There's a brief pause on this point. Her death deserves respect and acknowledgement, and she may not be the last to meet such a fate before the fighting is over.]

...We'll fight for your homes, too. After all, our worlds aren't that different, right? They might be flawed in their own ways, and there might even be some of you who would rather stay here when this is done. But every world and the life on it is precious, and it beats whatever phony world Yima and her followers come up with.

Speaking of Yima: I've discussed this with a few people already, but I suspect she's still alive. When the Blight almost destroyed Kenos, somehow she was still around. When I asked her about it, she said she wasn't bound by time like a normal person is. She can exist in different times and different places simultaneously; I don't know how it works, but maybe she even foresaw this attempt on her life before it even happened.

That said, it's just speculation, so we might as well play dumb and behave towards Zenith as if we're convinced she's dead for now. It'll be easier for us that way.

[Others have probably arrived at a similar conclusion, perhaps people among Zenith's ranks too, but it bears saying, particularly for those newly arrived to the conflict.]

Anyway, enough about her -- how about we use this opportunity for a little strategy get-together? We have a few new faces around, so feel free to introduce yourself and your capabilities.

For those of us who have been around longer, feel free to toss in an introduction too. More importantly, share what you know about Zenith and its current capabilities, in combat or otherwise. Any insight into their current thinking would be useful right now, too. What's their morale like? We know by now that some of them really hate our guts, and I wonder how much their desire for revenge is going to play into the next battle...

[He sounds casual, almost flippant, but there's a serious point in there he's sure he doesn't need to overstate: the more loyal Zenites are going to have some serious motivation in the next battle to get back at them, whether they believe Yima is gone or not.]

Let's not let our own judgement be clouded by revenge, even if we've sustained losses. We need to go into this with a clear head, looking toward the future.

Oh-- on that note, Hayame wants to speak with some of you about some further strategising either before or after the Oracle. Sorry that's a little vague, but I'm sure she'll talk to you about it properly when the time comes. For now, let's just focus on one thing at a time.

Aww, thanks, Subaru! You're always such a gentleman.

[And communion does make calling for help from a long distance a lot easier...!]

Wait, so we got a vampire hunter and an actual vampire?

[Just an observation she's made while listening in on the introductions.]

Are we doing okay?

Is there any other way we could possibly get more information about the history of this place?

I mean... We really don't know anything about the Oracles, and we just keep gathering them anyway. We've heard that there have been victories in the past generations of Shard Bearers, but nobody has been able to say more than that.

I know that people have tried to look into it before, but... It seems like that should be a priority, after what that thing said?

Wizard Howl.

I introduced myself a short while ago, so I won't repeat what I said then.

[ there's something of a mental shrug, disturbing the metaphorical cloud of cologne that follows Howl even in Communion. ]

But, I can assist with some preparation for this "Oracle," at least. Please visit me if you're in need of anything magic-related.

Good to hear it. Reminds me, I neglected to cover this...do you have spells to help someone recover from ailments like poison?

You know I'd follow your lead, if you're volunteering.

A bit of research regarding this world. The researcher was killed before they could share their findings, so it stands to reason it must be interesting.

[ No harm in mentioning it among Meridians. Whatever they find, it'll surely be shared soon enough. ]

Just waiting on a little agreement to be honored.

Got it in one. Fire's a strong suit of his, wind's one of mine, so I could fan his flames and concentrate them on our target.

[ It sounds tidy, but they were in tunnels, so it was a smoky endeavor. ]

Took a couple rounds, but we turned it to ash. At the time, he thought it was a "mimic", which is apparently some predatory creature. It was taking the guise of supplies... Now whatever it is, it's topside. I agree with you that it's a problem.

[personal profile] ex_fend346 2024-03-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of you to say, but I'm sure others would offer the same.

[ Still, the words come with the air of a soft smile.

There follows a considered pause, before he thinks to add: ]

If you don't mind my asking, have you found your friend?

I dabble in nearly all fields of magic, although I have my own specialties. Those being potions, portals, teleportation, and transmogrification.

Some of the Oracles have taken place in unusual locations, separate from the main islands of Kenos, correct? I could likely assist with helping those who find themselves in a bind, at least.

But when it comes to healing... that's one area I'm not particularly well-versed in. Removal of curses and other spells, yes, but healing one's original body, no.

Mhm! If you need help, you should ask Set. He's very reliable, and he'll do his utmost to assist you where he can, if you request his aid. Plus, he's really knowledgeable about everything we've been through, so he'll give you good advice!

Haha, I have my reasons!

Manifestation is a type of magecraft in my world. Actually, without manifesting, you can't really do much of anything.

[ so perhaps whatever is powering chrono's manifestation is the equivalent to magical energy in flat's world. interesting! ]

So that way, you can summon monsters?

Curses, huh? Now that falls outside my purview — it's popularly maintained that's only superstition where I hail from.

If healing interests you, it sounds like you'd be capable. Magical aptitude goes a long way. Even without it, one can learn with effort.

[ Don't mind the mental image of a military camp, thoroughly medieval with a fortress at its heart, as a plume of flame bursts into the air from some distance away. Yuri can't help but think of his world's Dimitri when learning through hard work comes to mind. ]

I don't see it elsewhere...yet...

[ something is making his mind wander yet again, and there's a cold stillness in the communion. as if no one were there from the start.

and then, he continues. ]

No, that's not right. But what happened was a lot harder to explain. Have you seen any of the citizens looking kind of confused? Like they talk about people that moved away or things that disappeared? Well sometimes, we would be talking about something like a store that they came from and then suddenly, it would, uh...well... you know when you're deleting a lot of files from your computer and you're watching them disappear from your computer one by one? It kind of felt like that, but magically.

[ sorry d and everyone else. try to decipher that. ]

It's going to get worse. Probably. [ a pause. ] Most likely.

We come from wildly different realms, but even so, you've always had charisma. And you're honorable, so you can win people over.

[ And because it's Communion, Dimitri can't escape the fact that Yuri truly does believe in him. It all but radiates through their mental connection. ]

Nor have I. I apologize, I should have worded my words of encouragement better.

[Ahem. Let her give this a second shot here.]

While I do believe in restoring our old worlds I also believe it's important that we look towards this one and our current lives as well. Supporting one another is a big step towards restoring our own worlds after all. No matter how temporary this may be I believe we can make this a good home for now.

[personal profile] fishfearme 2024-03-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
...no, we do not.

[Other worlds were so strange, so interesting.]

For transportation, we use mounts. Mostly horses, but when the terrain is difficult pegasi or wyverns are used instead. There are also warp spells, but they are restricted by range and the strength and skill of the mage, so it's not something that can be used in a cross-continental fashion...

[Unless you're a Slither, that is. Bitches be teleporting all over the shop (and have intercontinental ballistic nukes and an underground rave chamber but anyways).]

But returning to your... turn of phrase. You're saying that I'm attempting to use... a spell with an inferior energy source...? [He's guessing.]
