LOCKED TO MERIDIAN

[Claude's communion prescence has always been like a summer breeze; warm, easygoing, albeit difficult to read before it moves on. Now it has more of a brittle, bitter quality, like a looming dust-cloud he has to hold at a distance. There's no going back from this point when he knows things will only escalate from here, and so now seems like an important time to address his fellow Meri.]

The fight for the next Oracle will be on us soon. The Tribune may have been slain, but he entrusted the future of the worlds to us. Though he won't be able to help us see this through, we can still fight for him, and all the others we've lost along the way. We can fight for Springstar... and we can fight for Quetzalcoatl.

[There's a brief pause on this point. Her death deserves respect and acknowledgement, and she may not be the last to meet such a fate before the fighting is over.]

...We'll fight for your homes, too. After all, our worlds aren't that different, right? They might be flawed in their own ways, and there might even be some of you who would rather stay here when this is done. But every world and the life on it is precious, and it beats whatever phony world Yima and her followers come up with.

Speaking of Yima: I've discussed this with a few people already, but I suspect she's still alive. When the Blight almost destroyed Kenos, somehow she was still around. When I asked her about it, she said she wasn't bound by time like a normal person is. She can exist in different times and different places simultaneously; I don't know how it works, but maybe she even foresaw this attempt on her life before it even happened.

That said, it's just speculation, so we might as well play dumb and behave towards Zenith as if we're convinced she's dead for now. It'll be easier for us that way.

[Others have probably arrived at a similar conclusion, perhaps people among Zenith's ranks too, but it bears saying, particularly for those newly arrived to the conflict.]

Anyway, enough about her -- how about we use this opportunity for a little strategy get-together? We have a few new faces around, so feel free to introduce yourself and your capabilities.

For those of us who have been around longer, feel free to toss in an introduction too. More importantly, share what you know about Zenith and its current capabilities, in combat or otherwise. Any insight into their current thinking would be useful right now, too. What's their morale like? We know by now that some of them really hate our guts, and I wonder how much their desire for revenge is going to play into the next battle...

[He sounds casual, almost flippant, but there's a serious point in there he's sure he doesn't need to overstate: the more loyal Zenites are going to have some serious motivation in the next battle to get back at them, whether they believe Yima is gone or not.]

Let's not let our own judgement be clouded by revenge, even if we've sustained losses. We need to go into this with a clear head, looking toward the future.

Oh-- on that note, Hayame wants to speak with some of you about some further strategising either before or after the Oracle. Sorry that's a little vague, but I'm sure she'll talk to you about it properly when the time comes. For now, let's just focus on one thing at a time.

Huh. Is Necromancy actually a thing people around here are okay with being practiced...?

[She is still new and the vibe check has been a struggle.]

Oh, they are? I'm sorry, then! I shouldn't be calling your friends "monsters".

[ he sounds genuinely apologetic about this. ]

But they do sound really cool. I'd really like to see them one day!

Yessir! Flat Escardos, happy to be of service.

[ the image of him saluting in an exaggerated fashion comes to yuri's mind. in fact, he's doing it irl as well. ]

I didn't ask.

[ He says it extremely straightforwardly, so there's no doubting that simply not asking is pretty much the extent of it... But with a light sound, he does remember— ]

Ah, but the spells I've taken up in necromancy aren't the "reanimating the dead" sort, not as... flesh blobs or whatever, anyways. I focus more on supportive spells in my Necromancy, such as creating a Bone Widow or empowering my allies with magic so that they simply cannot die. [ ... ] Well. For a bit. It's not permanent, obviously.

Warp spells... no, that's definitely not something we have. So I think that we're even!

[ that sort of thing belongs closer to the realm of the Second Magic, something that no mage can do in flat's world. even himself, as heretical as his own magecraft is, has to abide by the rules of the world. in other words, no warping. ]

Something like that? Like, obviously your dragon takes much more magical energy, but your body's used to absorbing energy at the pace that a human mage needs. So you'd either need something that's more refined... or you'd have to learn how to suddenly start absorbing larger amounts of energy when you're in that form.

I think, at least!

[ He doesn't sweat it in the slightest. It's not the first time people have had notions about vampires and it won't be the last, so Subaru responds in good cheer. ]

Much of what I've heard in my travels doesn't apply to me. I have no idea where people came up with garlic and sunlight, for example.

[ He also doesn't need to feed nearly so often as a made vampire, but he'll leave that aside for others' comfort. ]

I also wasn't changed, as I said, which makes me different from those who were. It's not common, and I don't blame anyone for being unfamiliar.

Appreciate the enthusiasm.

[ He's reminded of a younger Ashe, before the days of chasing him about and nagging him about his criminal activities... ]

Do you happen to know detoxifying magic?
escardos: (Default)

[personal profile] escardos 2024-03-09 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I am! How about you? You haven't gotten injured again, have you?

[ the smile on his face softens just slightly, but the excitement in his eyes is obvious as he continues. ]

I guess we're allies for real now, aren't we? I mean, we kind of already were, but now we're allies and friends. This is great.

Seems so. Guess it's good we're learnin' as much as we can, even if I still think it's gonna feel kinda. "Baby's first Oracle" no matter what, for us who woke up recently.

[ and he really is uncomfortable with how insistent some of their allies are about shattering shards. at least there are a few voices of reason, but still. ]

If you see me around, don't hesitate to call out, alright?
escardos: (heuit.)

[personal profile] escardos 2024-03-09 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Detox?

[ flat hums, thoughtful. ]

There's a few methods I have in mind, but I think it would all depend on the type of toxin that it is. What happened?

S'okay, I know since they're not humanoid it's an easy assumption. The people from Cray, we call 'em "units" as like, a general term. There's some humanoid units in my deck too, but I can't summon those guys.

[ he hasn't actually tried, but that sounds correct??? ]

I don't mind showin' you, could probably use the practice before everything goes to shit anyway. Plus, I wanna hear more about your magic stuff, too.

[ raising his hand

he is both high ranking AND a known member of the Church! ]

I cannot promise I will not protect important intel from those who could flinch and flee, but I could be convinced to assist such an endeavor.

[personal profile] ex_fend346 2024-03-09 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't since the attack on Springstar... And as I am now, I'd recover quickly enough.

[ In truth, Subaru's still quite surprised he was capable of harmonizing after all, but he can't help feeling heartened by Flat's enthusiasm. ]

I think it's best this way. I wouldn't have wished to be pitted against you.

[ Not that he'd be willing to hurt Flat if he had been, but it's simpler like this. ]

[personal profile] ex_fend346 2024-03-09 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Of course. And if you could use assistance, you can call on me.

[ Subaru owes him for all he'd done for him, and besides, Chrono is a good person in his book. If he can help him, then he'll do just that. ]

I do wish we knew what to expect, but it seems we'll only know when we find out.

Oh, nothing at the moment... But I had a recent experience that got me thinking I should see if anyone else knows a spell like that.

[ Marianne taught him to alleviate his allergies, of all things, but it has a wide range of applications. It strikes him as worth sharing if he can, and if people need it. ]

Someone back home taught it to me, and it comes in handy for all manner of things. In my case it was venom.

[ Gray knew all this so she doesn't have much to say, but she still feels she ought to support Flat's entrance onto the Meridian stage. So she's here doing the mental equivalent of standing on the sidelines and holding up a little "go Flat go" sign... Make those friends!! ]

And the Tribune was but a man, and they ate him and used his empty husk like a puppet.

[ That's just fine, Hayame. This is a position he's willing to defend. ]

The point is to consider the extent of the damage already done.

This isn't idealism or sentimentality. It's the very real threat of doing more damage than we realise. We can't afford to be so shortsighted. Zenith is not our only enemy, and it's one of the few things about any of this we know for a fact.

Ah, not much different from my Entropic aura, then.

[One probably wouldn't think Entropy would have such a spell, but such is what happens to a lesser studied school of magic.]

But. Yeah. I wasn't fond of dealing with corpses, either. Too... messy, and short-term.

[Souls are much cleaner and more ethical! Kind of. Or that's what she tells herself.]
faceripper: (pic#16737661)

[personal profile] faceripper 2024-03-09 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely.

[ There's almost a sigh in that word, like he's saying "finally, someone gets it" through the noise alone. ]

Necromancy was something I picked up for its incidental benefits, since otherwise, I find it rudimentary. But considering my... Ugh, I shall just call it condition— It is one way that I can actually heal myself. The healing spells I once used were not effective in the slightest. Quite the opposite.

[ So, as a result, he's also interested in what she mentions. ]

Tell me more about your Entropic aura, incidentally. I've not heard of anything called that.

[Whatever notions Jade had about vampires are next to non-existent. She's. Heard about them? And they have something to do with blood? Or something? But beyond that, nothing.]

I see. The thing about garlic and sunlight is news to me. Then again, I'm pretty sure they're not even... real... where I'm from.

[Just another bedtime horror story and all that junk.]

What d'you mean by "changed"? I know you said you weren't, but that's a thing?

[personal profile] ex_fend346 2024-03-09 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ The presence is familiar. It takes him a few moments to gauge who he thinks it might be, puzzling over this before she's getting quiet appreciation sent right back her way.

Miss Gray is so nice she ran to his rescue twice. ]

I probably am naïve.

[ said with a shrug of dismissal, but there's a layer of frustration under it. ]

This sucks, I'll still fight regardless, but at the same time, I really can't help but think of their goal as understandable as well. It'll make fightin' harder, and some people here really hate that.

Mr. Howl...

[ Hello!! Here's a little spot of sun peeking through the gloom. As with Subaru, Gray is just glad to no longer have to consider one day putting Howl's Shard on a spike (figuratively speaking). ]

[It's kind of a relief, really. Considering how careful Jade has to be with her practices in her world, she wasn't sure how well it would take in this one.

[Then again, she still doesn't. But it helps knowing someone who isn't going to be weird about it.]

By your "condition" you mean your, uh... lack of skin? I can see how regular healing would have the opposite effect, since the Thaumaturgy I'm familiar with tends to be used against the undead.

[Yeah, she noticed. It did startle her at first, but she's over it.]

Entropy is used in manipulating the forces of life and death, among other things. The aura itself helps boost the strength of those around me.

Incidentally this type of magic usually drains a bit of my life, so I have to be careful with it.
